The Basin & Energy Research section performs research into the nature and occurrence of oil, gas, and coal in the Cenozoic depocenters and geosynclines of Louisiana and around the world. The BERS disseminates research and technical information widely, especially to the independent oil and gas producers of Louisiana, thereby enabling more economically efficient exploration and production operations. The Basin & Energy Research section derived from the merger of the LSU Basin Research Institute, est. 1984, into the Louisiana Geological Survey in 2000.

The Cartographic Section of the LGS prepares maps and geographic information systems (GIS) data for LGS and other LSU research departments. It also produces map products under direct contract from other government agencies, traditional printed maps and GIS products, and technical illustrations for scientific publications/presentations utilizing graphic design and image processing software. The cartographic staff works closely with technical editors in the preparation of scientific publications ranging from simple reports to complex books and atlases utilizing the latest electronic publishing and pre-press software.

Geologic Mapping & Mineral Resources
The Geologic Mapping and Mineral Resources Section of the LGS conducts investigations of the surface geology of Louisiana and renders the results in map format at intermediate and large scales (1:100,000 and 1:24,000, respectively). These investigations are done in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey under the STATEMAP component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP). Although these investigations do not focus specifically on mineral resources, the geologic maps generated can have value for minerals exploration and resource assessment via derivative uses (the identification of economically significant properties associated with the units depicted on geologic maps).
The Louisiana Geological Survey is the only research organization doing geologic mapping in the state of Louisiana. The continuing mapping effort is supported by cooperative agreements with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the STATEMAP component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program approved by the U.S. Congress.

Geologic Review is an ongoing program created by the Louisiana Geological Survey in 1982 which provides regulatory technical assistance to the Coastal Management Division (CMD) of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources and to three districts of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Please email Dr. Clare Falcon for details.
The Geophysical Section of LGS focuses on the physical processes and properties of the earth. Using quantitative methods, these processes and properties can be analyzed to measure gravity, magnetism, locate potential petroleum reservoirs and other mineral deposits, as well as archaeological sites among other interdisciplinary phenomena.
