The Division of Computer Science and Engineering offers both an MS and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, as well as a Graduate Minor. Our graduate program is designed to be flexible, providing students with opportunities to take courses and engage in research across core and applied/interdisciplinary areas. Currently, approximately 100 students are enrolled in our program, with an even split between PhD and MS candidates.

M.Sc. in Computer Science

Our Master's program is a comprehensive and adaptable one, preparing students for diverse, computer science-driven careers and providing a solid foundation for those intending to pursue a doctoral degree. The curriculum spans essential topics like computational theory, algorithms, operating systems, programming languages, networks, computer graphics, databases and data analytics, and software development, as well as specialized areas such as computational and systems science.

Ph.D. in Computer Science

Our Ph.D. program is one tailored for talented students aiming to excel in research careers within academia or industry. It addresses the growing demand for experts at the forefront of theoretical and applied computer science. Our curriculum encompasses key areas including theoretical foundations, systems and architecture, databases and analytics, software engineering, computational science, and digital media, equipping students to lead and innovate in these dynamic fields.

Graduate Admission Requirements

Prospective LSU Students

Applicants must be admitted by both the LSU Graduate School and the Division of Computer Science and Engineering. Admission to the PhD or MS program is based on the following criteria:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution is required for MS applicants (and/or a master’s degree for the PhD program). Applicants should have a comprehensive background in computer science, including coursework in data structures, algorithms, programming languages, and operating systems.

A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

GRE scores are optional for both programs.

Foreign applicants must submit TOEFL scores of at least 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test), or an IELTS score of at least 6.5.

A statement of purpose outlining the applicant’s career goals and research interests is required for PhD applicants.

At least two letters of recommendation are required.

Current LSU Students

LSU students from other programs who wish to transfer into the computer science graduate program must meet these additional requirements:

  • Complete CSC 3102 (Advanced Data Structures & Algorithm Analysis) and at least two core courses (e.g., CSC 4101: Programming Languages, CSC 4103: Operating Systems, CSC 4890: Theory of Computation) with grades of at least one A- or higher and two B- or higher.
  • Demonstrate strong programming skills in C or Java.

Application Deadlines

Priority deadlines for regular admission with full financial consideration:

Fall Semester: January 15
Spring Semester: October 1

Final deadlines for late admission:

Fall Semester: May 15
Spring Semester: October 15

For more information, please refer to the LSU Graduate School and Division of Computer Science and Engineering Program Requirements in the General Catalog.

Note

Due to the competitive nature of admissions, meeting these requirements does not guarantee admission. Exceptionally talented students who do not meet all criteria may be admitted on probation, provided that any deficiencies are addressed by the end of their first semester. These students may need additional time to fulfill degree requirements.
